History

Holmby Hills has a rich history that goes along with the upscale neighborhood that it represents. Originally, it began as a home to the Tongva Native Americans. Later, it was granted to a Spanish soldier who took over the land where present-day UCLA is now located. After being granted by several mayors to multiple people, and becoming the site of the Wolfskill Ranch. When John Wolfskill died in 1913, his ranch was the most valuable piece of land between Beverly Hills and the ocean. His heirs sold the 3,296 acre ranch to Broadway Department Store founder, Arthur Letts, Sr. for $2,000,000 in 1919.

Three years later, the Janss brothers re- purchased the land for $7,000,000. On the former Wolfskill Ranch’s most picturesque land, the Janss Investment Company prepared a 400-acre estate district known as Holmby Hills. The lots ranged from 1 to 4 acres each and all the houses had to cost at least $25,000, $5,000 more than the minimum in Bel Air. In 1925, the estate sites hit the market. A decade later, mansions began popping up on the surrounding hills as Hollywood began booming and churning out movie stars, loaded with cash, and looking for the hottest neighborhoods.
